2018 FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards

FirstCar launched this awards scheme in 2015 to recognise the work of road safety professionals in seeking to reduce casualties among young drivers.

The Awards were an immediate success and last year attracted more than 60 entries from road safety teams and other organisations across the UK.

The 2018 FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards presentation ceremony will be held at Young Driver Focus 2018 on 25 April.


There are five categories to enter, as follows.

1. Best New Scheme

The scheme will:

  • Be launched within the period January 2017 – December 2017.
  • Have a data-driven evidence of need
  • Have clear and measurable aims and objectives
  • Demonstrate how the development of the scheme was monitored to ensure value for money
  • Demonstrate innovation and uniqueness
  • Demonstrate how the need for the scheme was identified using objective data
  • Provide evidence of preliminary evaluation

2. Best Education and Training Initiative

This will be in the form of a scheme that provides education or training directly, either within a classroom setting, in or on a vehicle, in a simulator or real-world setting, and will not be a media campaign.  The organisation must submit written evidence of evaluation.  The key elements that the panel will be looking for are:

  • Has a data-driven evidence of need
  • Has been pre-tested through a pilot scheme
  • Has clear and measurable aims and objectives, goals/learning outcomes
  • Has been evaluated and has evidence that can demonstrate an improvement in skills, knowledge, or increased awareness of participants immediately after receiving the intervention and at regular time periods thereafter
  • Provides a maintenance element i.e. appropriate follow up work at regular and timely intervals, with examples, where appropriate, of how this feedback has resulted in changes to the interventions following this feedback.

3. Best Partnership Scheme

The organisation will provide evidence that the scheme:

  • Has a data-driven evidence of need
  • Has clear and measurable aims and objectives
  • Involves other organisations or individuals in its development, and delivery, and what the roles are
  • Has been, or is currently being, evaluated.
  • Incorporates a wider community involvement, with special emphasis on collaborative working with different partners from different sectors
  • If the entry quotes the partners involved, please include who they are, with contact details for mystery shopping potential.

4. Best Young Driver Media Campaign

This will be in the form of a media campaign, and not a training scheme. The organisation will provide evidence that the campaign:

  • Has a data-driven evidence of need
  • Has clear and measurable aims and objectives
  • Messages have been pre-tested through focus groups, questionnaires or other suitable means. Please append these in the supporting documents, where possible.
  • Is effectively aimed at its target audience
  • Shows innovative thinking
  • Has fully understood its target market
  • Has been fully evaluated in terms of reach and recall

5. Best Private Sector Initiative

The initiative will:

  • Have a data-driven evidence of need
  • Have clear and measurable aims and objectives
  • Demonstrate how the need for their initiative was identified using objective data
  • Provide evidence of evaluation
  • Have made a real difference (with evidence) to improving young driver behavior
  • Be specifically targeted towards the young driver

How to enter and entry guidance notes

How to enter

  • Please email your entry to james@firstcar.co.uk before the closing date of 26th January 2018. CLICK HERE to download the pre-formatted entry form.
  • Entries are limited to 1,000 words.
  • Three single pages of supporting documents can be submitted with the entry, supplied as a single PDF, no larger than 5MB. The supporting statement may include text, images and graphs.
  • When entering the awards online, you need to submit a 25-word synopsis to be used in the Young Driver Focus delegate handbook, with a supporting logo.

Scoring system

  • Each entry will be judged on each of the bullet points listed above on a scale of 0-5. No evidence scores zero, very strong evidence scores the maximum five points.
  • The entry with the highest total score, taking in to account all judges scores, will be adjudged the winner.
  • In the event of tie, the judges will make a collective decision.
  • Where a judge is precluded from offering a score due to a vested interest, an average score is taken from the other scoring judges and added to the overall total.
  • Gold, silver and bronze awards will be awarded per category.
  • Identical multiple entries are not permitted in to different categories.
  • A scheme can only be nominated for an award in one category. The judges reserve the right to move the entry in to a different category if they see fit.
  • If the award entry is a national scheme, run by several different partners, please just enter as one entry.
  • Please assume no knowledge from the judges on the award entry.
  • When entering the awards online, you need to submit a 25-word synopsis to be used in the Young Driver Focus delegate handbook, with a supporting logo.
  • Sending in your entry with the entrant’s name confirms your agreement with our terms and conditions.
  • Please complete a separate entry for each category you enter.
  • A carefully selected panel of judges with extensive industry experience, who agree to strict impartiality and confidentiality, judges the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards.
  • No member of the panel will judge a category that their organisation has entered or assisted in any way.
  • No judge is permitted to speak to entrants about their entry before or during the event, but entrants can ask for feedback post event to help improve moving forwards.

Timings

  • The awards period cover campaigns, which have run 1st January 2017 – 31st December 2017
  • All entries must be received by 26th January 2018
  • The shortlist will be announced w/c 26th February 2018
  • The awards will be presented at Young Driver Focus, Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, London, 25th April 2017.

Terms and conditions

  • All entries must use the online entry form via firstcarmedia.co.uk Please do not send entries by post or email, they will not be considered.
  • The organisation and the person named on the entry form as THE ENTRANT will be the names used for any award presented at the Awards event.
  • By entering you agree to the information in your entry being shared (in absolute confidence) with our judges, solely for the purposes of the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards.
  • A member of our team or one of our judges may contact you, if they require any further information or clarification.
  • The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered in to.
  • If you are shortlisted for an award you are expected to attend the event. Please do not enter if you are not prepared to attend.
