Experts will examine ‘young driver behaviour’

Three acclaimed experts will come together in one session at Young Driver Focus 2017 to provide delegates with valuable insights into young driver behaviour, and how to influence it.

Lucía Magis-Weinberg from the Department of Experimental Psychology, University College London (UCL), and Ian Edwards, New View Consultants, complete the lineup for the session titled ‘Young Driver Behaviour’, which as previously reported also includes James Watson from the Behavioural Insights Team.

Young Driver Focus will once again be held at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London on 26 April 2017. The 2017 event is being jointly organised by Road Safety GB, FirstCar and the RAC Foundation and sponsored by the young driver insurer, ingenie.

Lucía Magis-Weinberg is a neuroscientist at UCL who specialises in understanding how the brain develops during adolescence. She is currently focusing on how different contexts (such as the presence of peers or rewards) can influence an adolescent’s ability to regulate their thoughts and emotions.

In her presentation, titled ‘Inside the teenage brain’, Lucía will give a brief overview of how protracted maturation of the brain during adolescence can play a role in making suboptimal decisions during exciting and emotionally charged contexts.

Ian Edwards has been a road safety professional since the early 1990s. His career includes spells as an approved driving instructor and as road safety manager for Kirklees Council.

He has been working with the Road Safety GB Academy since its inception four years ago, and instrumental in developing the Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course and the Behavioural Change Course which are both delivered by the Academy.

His presentation, titled ‘Behavioural change in road safety’ will explore a number of the latest ideas in relation to behavioural change techniques and models. It will focus on models and behavioural change techniques that can be simply applied by road safety practitioners when developing young driver/rider interventions.
